A Look Back at 2020 Travel

Looking back, 2020 has been a strange year for the whole world. It has impacted every single person – the closures, lockdowns, that time where the grocery store shelves were practically empty – it has also greatly impacted travel. I don’t need to tell you – for a long time no one could really travel anywhere. Some avenues of travel are back open, but we still have a long way to go before we can travel like we did before March 2020.

So, what are our thoughts about 2020 travel here at Travel with the Whitakers?! Well, we have a lot of thoughts. First, I’ll get the bad out of the way. Business wise, it has been rough. I won’t go into detail on that, but I’m sure that you understand.

Now for the part where we’re thankful. We are so thankful that our cruises at the beginning of the year took place when they did. We sailed from Port Canaveral at the very end of January, and from New Orleans at the beginning of February. We got to experience two amazing Disney ships and ten nights of magical cruising – which we love. During that trip we also got to visit Cattail Marsh in Beaumont, Texas, the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, Disney Springs, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We also stayed at Disney World for two nights! We went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and visited Galaxy’s Edge for the first time! We also took a trip to Legoland. During the cruises we stopped in Nassau, Key West, and at Disney’s Castaway Cay.

The year started out so well for us travel wise! We were lucky that we sailed when we did, because at the time there were only a few cases of COVID in the United States, and they were all travel related then. After we got back from our vacation, Howard was able to take a work trip, too!

After that, things started to change. Work trips were canceled, the world shut down. Trips that were booked either needed to be canceled or rescheduled. One of my own trips was included.

Although I was not able to take my personal solo Disney World trip in May when it was originally supposed to take place, I am so grateful that I was able to go in October. There were certainly differences to the trip, but it was great to be able to get away, and to experience that Magic!

We week after I got back from Disney World, I was able to take Christian camping with his Cub Scout pack which was a lot of fun! We spent the weekend in the woods, enjoying nature.

What are our future travel plans?

As of right now we have a family camping trip planned for the end of December. After that, not much for a while. We were originally supposed to sail on the Disney Wonder in February 2021. As of right now that cruise is still set to sail, but with Disney having canceled cruises through the end of January 2021, and things being the way they are right now, it most likely will be canceled. We cancelled that cruise a few months ago, and are currently booked on the November 2021 Eastbound Panama Canal. Fingers crossed that it gets to happen! Outside of that, we will be moving at some point – we just don’t know where we’re moving to!

This year has not been the best year, but we are so thankful that we have been able to do some traveling!

How has this year impacted your travels?
