Our Holiday Traditions!

Somehow 2020 is about to end. Parts of this year seemed like they went so slow – I’m looking at you March and April – and then other parts of the year sped by before we knew what was happening. The last couple of months have gone by super fast, and it has brought us to Christmas.

There are a lot of mixed emotions out there about holiday traditions – some people love them, and some people hate them because they feel like they’re being forced to do something by people that aren’t alive anymore. As a family we have created our own holiday traditions over the years, and today we’re going to share them with you.

Decorating for Christmas – We have two outdoor decorations, one inflatable and a Star Shooter light projector. We normally put these up the first weekend in December.

Indoor Decorations – We normally get our tree and decorate it and the inside of the house with simple decorations two weeks before Christmas.

Christmas Cookies – I love to make some sort of cookie with the kids. Bella loves to help make the dough, and Christian likes to cut out Christmas shapes with a variety of Christmas cookie cutters.

Peppermint Bark – This is a favorite in our house! It’s delicious and so easy to make! It normally has a place in our house at Christmas.

Christmas Eve – We normally attend mass on Christmas so that we can just enjoy time together on Christmas Day. We also let the kids open one present on Christmas Eve. This is also when we have a tasty Christmas dessert – this year it’s going to be chocolate peanut butter cheesecake! We also can't forget to put out milk and cookies for Santa, and some carrots or peppers for the reinderr!

Christmas Day – We love to have gingerbread for breakfast. Not gingerbread cookie, it’s more of a cake and it is amazing for Christmas breakfast. If we don’t have gingerbread, we’ll have something like pancakes or waffles. After breakfast we open gifts, Facetime with family since we live far away from everyone, and then spend the day enjoying time with each other. The kids like to play with all of their new toys! To end the day, we enjoy a Christmas dinner.

After Christmas – After Christmas we normally leave the tree and decorations up until at least New Years Day.

New Years – On New Years Eve we watch movies or play games to make it all the way to midnight. We have let the kids try to stay up in the past, but they haven’t quiet made it – YET! New Years is where we do indulge in traditions that aren’t entirely our own, we eat pork, sauerkraut, and black-eyed peas.

What are some of your holiday traditions?!
