What to Do When it Rains at Disney
We
all know that rain is important, especially in California where rain can
sometimes be sparse. (Believe me, I lived in California for a big portion of
the last drought.) While rain it’s incredibly common most of the year in
California it can be an almost daily thing in Florida. While the weather can be
unpredictable at both US Disney parks you shouldn’t let a little, or sometimes
even a lot of rain, ruin your day or your trip. So, here are some our tips for
what to do when it rains at Disney.
Rain Gear – The first step
is to be prepared for the chance of rain, especially if you’re visiting Disney
World. A poncho, whether re-useable or a cheap throwaway one, or a small umbrella,
or a light but water resistant jacket that can easily be stored in your park
day bag is a must if you want to enjoy your day in the rain without getting
soaked and soggy. If you’re traveling with a stroller something to cover the
stroller and keep it dry is a must, too. We personally use a cheap $1 poncho to
cover the stroller and it works great.
Stay at the Parks – If it starts
raining, as long as the rain doesn’t get to the point where the park shuts
down, don’t leave! Many times the bus stops will be flooded with people headed
back to their resorts to get out of the rain. That means that, for the most
part, attractions will have shorter wait times. Many times the rain will only last
an hour, or less, so if you can, ride it out!
Stay Outside – Most of the
park guests that aren’t heading back to their resorts when it starts raining
and heading inside. So, rides and attractions that take place completely
indoors, or have queues that are mostly inside fill up FAST! As long as it’s
not raining too hard, and as long as there isn’t lightning most of the outdoor
attractions will stay open and have shorter lines!
Water Rides – If they’re still
open, which most of the times they will be as long as there isn’t lightning, head
to the water rides and enjoy them! After all, if you’re staying outside you’ll
be dealing with water anyway.
Enjoy – Especially if
it’s only a light rain, enjoy it. Embrace it. Splash in the puddles!
Be Careful – Enjoy the rain
and have fun, but don’t forget to be safe, too! Don’t run. Don’t slip. Also,
keep in mind that not everyone heads inside, but many people also don’t technically
stay outside, either. During our past two trips it has rained at least once. We
stayed outside, rode rides, and enjoyed ourselves. It was difficult to get
around, though, because every archway and overhang was packed full guests
trying to stay dry.
So,
if it starts to rain on your next trip don’t stress – enjoy it!
