Whispering Canyon Cafe Review

A while ago we talked about how we like to try at least one new place to eat every time we visit the Walt Disney World Resort. On our last trip we tried a few new places, one of those places was Whispering Canyon Café.

We were excited to finally be trying Whispering Canyon, it had been on our must try list for a while.

The restaurant is located inside of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, just off the main lobby. Like the resort the restaurant has a rustic feel to it, with Cowboys and Indians on the chair backs.

The staff and guests have a lot of fun – there are hobby horse races and if you ask for ketchup will be in for a surprise.

While you’re at Wilderness Lodge be sure to stop by the geyser by the pool! It goes off on the hour. Our favorite way to go to and from the resort is by watercraft and the boat launch isn’t far from the geyser, either.

The Food
The adults started the meal with the Moonshine Flight. The flight consisted of three different Troy & Sons Whiskeys. If you’re a fan of whiskey we suggest giving this flight a try – it’s a great way to try a variety of whiskeys. It’s also easily sharable.

Every good meal starts with bread and this one starts with Cornbread. We’ve shared about our love for cornbread before, and this one does not disappoint. Moist, crumbly cornbread, the same that is served at the Hoop Dee Doo Revue over at Fort Wilderness. Try, try, try not to eat too much bread because the portions here are HUGE!

Those of us that were on the deluxe dining plan enjoyed and shared a variety of appetizers.

The Gold Rush Western Chips are HUGE. Easily shareable for a large group. The chips are fresh and crisp and the chili-queso dip that they come with is rich and cheesy and delicious.

The Pulled Pork Spring Rolls were also quite delicious. Crisp spring roll wrappers filled with lots of pulled pork! The dish is served with a fresh corn relish and greens.

We also tried the Seasonal Soup which at the time we think was a corn soup. We mistakenly did not take notes like we had intended and the dish isn’t on the menu anymore. We do remember that is was creamy and delicious and topped with popcorn!

Between the eight of us we ordered four different menu items.

The Steak-Your-Claim Char-crusted New York Strip was juicy with a great char on the outside. The steak was served with broccolini, roasted potatoes and onions and topped with a creamy blue cheese butter.

The St. Louis-style Full-slab of Pork Ribs were meaty and glazed in a sweet and tangy barbecue sauce. If you’re a rib fan these will not disappoint The ribs were served with onion rings, creamy mashed potatoes and corn on the cob.

The Pork Shank which we ordered does not appear to be on the menu any more. It was moist and flavorful and literally fell off the bone. The bone-in meat was served over top of creamy and cheesy grits and roasted carrots.

Three of us ordered the All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Skillet. A HUGE skillet was brought to the table for the three of us to share. The All-You-Care-To-Enjoy is not a joke – if you want more of something they will bring it to you. The skillet is full to the brim with moist barbecue glazed ribs, barbecue chicken, moist smoked beef, Western sausage, pulled pork, creamy, buttery mashed potatoes, buttery green beans, corn on the cob and baked beans. Those of us that ordered the skillet also got salad with an apple vinaigrette. Everything in the skillet was AMAZING! We definitely did not regret ordering and look forward to doing so again in the future.

To finish the meal we ordered two different desserts.

The Granny Smith Caramel Apple Pie was the perfect option for the apple lover among us. Sweet and tart apples baked in a crumble like crust served with vanilla gelato and topped with caramel sauce. It is the classic combination of apples and caramel and apple pie with ice cream. It was sweet and tart, hot and cold. Just yum.

A few of us also ordered the Whispering Canyon Pioneer Chocolate Cake to go. Moist chocolate cake filled with chocolate and peanut butter chips. This was the perfect way to end the meal.

Overall
We all really enjoyed the food, the fun and the overall atmosphere at Whispering Canyon Café. The staff is friendly, the antics are fun and the food portions are HUGE and satisfying. We look forward eating here again sometime in the future. We hope that Whispering Canyon has made it onto your Disney Dining Wish List!
