Snacking Around the World

We are so sorry for the long intervals between blog posts – life is pretty crazy right now and by crazy we mean incredibly busy! But, have no fear, we have a new post for you now and we will also be posting again on Thursday! We’re going to take a quick break from talking about Disney Cruise Line and have a couple of posts about Disney on land. Don’t worry, when we get back to talking about DCL in about a week we’ll be talking about the best part – FOOD!

Speaking of food – that’s what we’re going to be telling you about today! We’re sure that at least some of you have heard about Drinking Around the World at Epcot. Adult beverages are available in each of the 11 countries around World Showcase that are specific to that country. However, drinking around the world is not for everyone (i.e. those under 21, pregnant/nursing women, and those just not interested in drinking) and for those there is Snacking Around the World. You can also couple your Snacking and Drinking Around the World to ensure a well, less drunk time.

One tip we have for both Drinking and Snacking Around the World is to share with someone else in your party. This will allow you, especially for the Snacking version, to be able to sample more delicious delights without filling up too much.

So, let’s start at one World Showcase and work our way around – all the while discussing amazing treats. Many snacks are available for snack credits from the Disney Dining Plan which makes snacking some much easier. We did learn on our last trip, though, that not every country has something available for a snack credit that you’re interested in. We did indulge in a snack from every country on our last trip (over the course of 2 ½ days) and we had to pay out of pocket for three or four. We’ll mentioned whether or not a snack credit can be used for our snack of choice or other notable mentions from each country.

Canada
In the Canada Pavilion there are a few options. Outside by the entrance to the garden pathway, under the Le Cellier sign there is a popcorn stand (available for a snack credit), but it there is nothing special here, you can get the same popcorn all over the parks.

Inside the shop on the “second level” of Canada there are a variety of pre-packaged snacks that include potato chips, popcorn, and maple candies and cookies. It appears we didn’t take many pictures in the Canada Pavilion, but you can get snacks like this in actual Canada – they have maple everything.

We sampled some Montreal Steak Spice Chips and they were pretty tasty. They’re your standard potato chips – nice and crispy – and with just the right about of seasoning. While we were in Canada in August we saw chips just like this, so you know they’re authentic! The price sign in the store had the dining plan symbol on it, maybe it was just the cast member working the register, but we had to pay out of pocket for this one.

United Kingdom
The UK may be best known for booze and fish and chips, but they have a few other great treats as well. If you would like a cookie or a side of chips you can use your snack credit for those at the Yorkshire Fish Shop. However, if you venture into the Tea Shop you will find yourself surround, by tea, and delicious UK treats. Candy bars such as Aero and Flake are amazing! Other Cadbury treats are available as well.

On this trip bought a Flake bar which is creamy, flaking, rich, chocolate deliciousness as well as a package of Crawford’s Blackcurrant Biscuits. The biscuits, or cookies, are crispy and filled with a sweet and slightly tangy blackcurrant filling. Yum! The candies and cookies will need to be paid for out of pocket.

France
The France Pavilion has so many amazing options! With both Balouganrie Patisserie and L’Artisans de Glace you’ll be glad that you start on this side of the World Showcase and not the other.

The bakery,  has so many delicious options, you may have to use more than one snack credit here. Yep, almost everything here is available for a snack credit. We sample the Frangipan – which was a flaky, buttery pastry filled with delicious almond paste. If like almond then this is for you! We also used a snack credit for a whole baguette and we brought it home with us!

L’Artisains de Glace, the ice cream shop, offers 16 delicious flavors of ice cream and sorbet as well as a warm pressed brioche ice cream sandwich! We tried two different flavors of ice cream – Fleur de sel and Profiterole. Both were creamy and full of flavor. The caramel was just salty enough and the profiterole had bites of soft choux dough throughout it – it was basically a bowl full of cream puff – and yes the ice cream is available for a snack credit!
Also available in France and for a snack credit are fresh crepes! Yum. On another trip we tried one with chocolate sauce and it was definitely worth the credit.

Morocco
Morocco offers various pastries as well as falafel and lentil salad. Most of what is available here, especially the pastries, will need to be paid for out of pocket.

We purchased an orange and almond roulade. It was a perfect balance of almond and orange and they paired well together. The cake was soft and spongey and the filling was jelly like and the top has a nice crunch from the almonds. It was definitely tasty, but it wasn’t something that we would be willing to pay for out of pocket again.

Japan
The Japan Pavilion offers Kakigori, which is a Japanese sno-cone like treat as well as other desserts and soup. Kabuki Café has Kakigori as well as ice cream and shushi available for snack credits!

We used our snack credit for some Miso Soup from Katsura Grill. The soup was full of flavor and easily shareable so that we could continue on our snack quest! Soup, salad, rice, vegetables, and desserts to include ice cream and cheese cake are available for snack credits!

America
The American Adventure offers funnel cakes and other American classics. Funnel cakes will need to be purchased out of pocket, but who doesn’t love a sugar covered deep friend “cake”? Soft pretzels as well as frozen slushies and sugar cookie pops are available at the two snack stands outside of the main building.

On our last trip though we journeyed into the Liberty Inn for the first time. An individual apple pie as well as a rocky road mousse brownie were available and we opted for the brownie. The brownie had three layers. The bottom layer was a moist, rich, chocolatey brownie. The middle layer was a rich chocolate mousse. And the whole thing was topped with marshmallows, nuts, and chocolate. This thing is HUGE and full of great chocolate flavor. The nuts provide a nice crunch and the marshmallows help to break up the richness of all of the chocolate. This brownie is definitely worth the snack credit.

Italy
There are some tasty treats available in the Italy Pavilion, but they will all need to be paid for out of pocket. Italian delights like tiramisu, cannoli, and gelato can be found at the gelato stand. Various Italian candies are also available in the shop – they’re sold by the piece so you can sample more than one!

We tried a few candies on our last trip – but our favorite “snack” from Italy is the gelato sandwich. Two delicious chocolate chip cookies sandwiched around a large scoop of creamy gelato in the flavor of your choice.

Germany
At Sommerfest in the Germany Pavilion you can find tasty German desserts to use your snack credits on. Black forest cake and apple strudel as well as fresh potato chips and potato salad are available here. If you’re looking for something a bit more filling hotdogs, sausages, and German mac and cheese are also available.

Our new favorite place in this pavilion, though, is Karamel Kuche. This sweet shop with great you with the smell of caramel. Various combinations of chocolate and caramel as well as caramel corn can all be “bought” with a snack credit. We sampled a dark chocolate sea salt caramel square on our last trip. Large amounts of delicious, creamy caramel coated in dark chocolate and sprinkled with sea salt. A perfect pairing.

China

Lotus Blossom Café, the quick service location in the China Pavilion offers hot and cold tea, smoothies, and ice cream for snack credits. The ice cream has Chinese influences – the flavors are lychee and caramel ginger.

The Joy of Tea stand has teas both hot and cold, ice cream, and slushies for those wanting a drink or something sweet. Curry chicken pockets and egg rolls are also available for snack credits. We tried the iced peach oolong tea – it had a nice peach flavor that wasn’t too strong, and it was cold and refreshing.

Norway
The Norway Pavilion has some amazing treats available in the Kringla Bakeri og Kafe! Sweet treats ranging from cakes to fruit tarts are available for snack credits. For those that want to break up the sweet treats salad and fruit can be had for a snack credit or for those looking for something more filling sandwiches can also be found here for a reasonable price.

On our last trip we tried an amazing chocolate cake! It was moist and full of great rich chocolate flavor and the cake had a smooth, fudgy texture. Our favorite snack from this pavilion is the school bread. School bread is a sweet bread filled with cardamom cream and topped with coconut. All of the flavors pair incredibly well together – and the cream in the middle is sweet and a great compliment to the bread. It can easily be shared and is definitely worth the snack credit.

Mexico
Mexican delights such as nachos, fruit ice pops, and churros can be found at Cantina de San Angel by the water. Nachos will need to be paid for out of pocket, but there are also a lot of really low cost “sides” that you use purchase to construct a small meal such as beans, cheese, and sour cream.

On our last trip we sampled the churros with caramel sauce. The churros themselves were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The cinnamon and sugar covered dough paired well with the not too sweet caramel sauce and provide us with a great pre Illuminations treat.
Epcot, specifically World Showcase in this case, is full of amazing snacking opportunities. We tackled Snacking Around the World and we look forward to doing it again when we have the chance. If you hope to be able to partake of a snack from all 11 countries in one day we highly recommend that you share your snacks and perhaps have them take the place of at least one of your meals for that day. No matter what you do, you should enjoy at least two of three delicious snacks every time you visit Epcot. Happy Snacking!
